What does a landscape designer do that a landscaper does not?
A landscape designer plans the site before anything is built. That means studying grade, drainage, soil, sun exposure, and how the house meets the land, then producing drawings that specify layout, materials, and planting. A landscaper installs the work. At Select Landscape Design we design first so that the installation, whoever performs it, is buildable and durable.
Where does Select Landscape Design work?
The studio is based in Pennsylvania and designs residential landscapes throughout the region, with additional project work in New England.
How much does landscape design cost?
Design fees depend on the size and complexity of the property and the level of documentation a project needs. Full master plans for a private residence require more study than a single terrace or planting plan. Email us with your site address and a brief description and we will outline a scope and fee.
When should I bring a landscape designer into a new build?
As early as possible, ideally before the home is sited. Placement and orientation affect sun exposure, drainage, views, and where outdoor living spaces will feel comfortable. Early involvement is far less expensive than reworking grade and hardscape later.
How long does a landscape design project take?
Design typically runs several weeks to a few months depending on scope and approvals. Installation depends on season and trade availability, and plantings need a few growing seasons to mature. We plan for how a landscape will look in five and ten years, not only on installation day.
What should I include in my first email?
Please include the site address, any existing plan work or survey, the best phone number to reach you, and a brief description of the project you have in mind. We respond within 48 hours.
Do you work with architects and builders?
Yes. A large share of our work is collaborative. We coordinate with architects, builders, masons, and irrigation specialists so the landscape is designed alongside the house rather than added afterward.
